The Viburnum 'Mohican', Viburnum lantana 'Mohican', is an incredibly tough shrub that is essentially evergreen in warmer climates. The dark, hairy leaves create a dark background to showcase other plants.It displays a very compact growth habit. The creamy white, flat topped flowers entirely envelop the plant in late April or May, followed by orange-red fruit in early July lasting a month before turning black in fall.The Mohican makes a nice hedge with the compact shape and heavy, dark green foliage. Alleghany Viburnum, viburnum x rhytidophylloides 'Alleghany', is a dense, compact rounded shrub with abundant, yellow-white flowers in spring, and then followed by brilliant red fruit in fall, that matures to black in winter. It has deep green foliage during the season, and is tolerant of hot, dry locations. Alleghany is adaptable to full sun or partial shade. It is much hardier than the leatherleaf viburnum, and it grows well at both extremes of its hardiness range. It prefers a moist, well-drained soil, but extremely windy sites should be avoided. Usually planted in mass groupings, it often is used in recreational areas and commercial plantings such as malls. It grows 10 feet in height and width.

Use as a specimen plant or effective in small masses and borders. American Cranberrybush is round-topped and fairly dense under cultivation, but can be poorly branched and open in native habitat. Cranberrybush Viburnum prefers a rich soil with ample moisture. It does well in full sun or shade and can become leggy and requires occasional renewal pruning to keep it in good form. It grows 10-12 feet tall and as wide and makes an excellent deciduous shrub for screening.

The Arrowwood Viburnum, Viburnum dentatum, is a deciduous shrub which usually grows 6 to 8 feet in height, reaching 15 feet under ideal conditions. Spread is equal to height. The habit is dense and multistemmed with arching branches. The foliage is glossy dark green, fall colors are yellows, reds and purples. The creamy flowers are not fragrant and they appear in early summer for two weeks on 2 to 4 inch cymes. The fall fruit is a blue-black drupe, small, very attractive to birds which disseminate the seeds.
