Pergola Designs

When it comes to pergola designs - there are generally 2 kinds, the type of pergola you find attached to the house or a free-standing pergola.  What you decide to build will depend largely on your garden design and where you have decided to put the pergola in the overall plan of the garden.  Pergolas are generally there to provide some shade to allow for more comfortable outdoor entertainment or to cut out the harsh rays of the afternoon sun to the south or west lying areas of the house.  Better Homes And Gardens has 2 pergola designs that I've found really attractive - one is attached to the house the other is a free standing pergola design.  Because it is such a large structure, building a pergola generally requires a friend to help you to make the building process safer.  Outdoor decor has a great range of ready made pergola kits which you could erect in an afternoon.

This pergola was built with foam-filled aluminum framing. It is higher in cost, but it is lighter and easier to handle, and has a longer life than wood. You can use cedar, redwood, or pressure-treated lumber, but apply the finish before final assembly. The lengths of all components will depend on your site.  This pergola design is free (plans can be downloaded)

Another one of BHG's pergola designs.  Plans are free and when completed, the pergola is 16X20foot.  Again you can vary the lengths of the wood to suit your garden site.

This pergola design features include classical white columns that have timeless appeal and gridwork overhead that supports fast-growing vines and allows dappled sunlight to filter through. Each plan contains: a photo of the project, a complete list of materials needed to get you started, detailed construction drawings, full-size patterns (where appropriate), and clearly written instructions to take you step by step through the project.

Elegance epitomized. This pergola is easily sized to fit any space, further enhancing your deck, patio, or yard. The one shown here occupies a 111x148" "footprint," but you’ll learn how to increase or decrease its dimensions as needed. Plans are available as both a downloadable plan and a Mail-Direct Plan.
