Hammocks are the ultimate in indulgence in a garden setting. There's something just so appealing about a hammock that everyone will be fighting to get into it and leave your garden setting or benches for dead. Hang a hammock in the garden and watch how it instantly becomes the best seat in the 'house' or garden. The only real problem I see with hammocks is that the temptation to just take a short little siesta could very well end up taking up your whole afternoon - time where you could've been tending to your gardening chores. Never mind, a little rest is always good for the soul and a little dreaming in the garden is just the ticket for those lazy summer afternoons where it's really too hot to be doing anything but lie in the cool shade of a beautiful tree and sip pink lemonade.
Hammocks - how to hang a hammock
If you are planning to have a mega-size hammock so that you can get up close and personal to someone else whilst swinging then you need about 15 feet between the 2 trees in order to cope with the weight of 2 average adults. If the hammock is your own private little haven then the distance between trees can be shorter - 12-13 feet. Usually the rule of thumb is to include 1 foot to the full length of the hammock from the ends of the circular ring supports.
Hardware required to hang a hammock
I know some people think they can just use screw eyes (fig1) instead of eye bolts (fig2) - but that's just downright dangerous. Screw eyes can pull lose easily and if you have kids that like bouncing around on the hammock, then you need to make doubly sure that a lazy afternoon isn't going to end up being a rude wake up call if the screw eyes don't hold and you find yourself on the grass. The rule of thumb is to position these between 4 and 5 feet from the ground.

You will also need a chain link connector like the one in Fig 3 to connect the eye bolt to the circular ring at the ends of the hammock.

Hammocks - cleaning
Keep your rope hammocks clean by soaking in a mild solution of soap and water and then allowing it to air dry - avoid putting the spreader bars in the water. If you've got a quilted hammock, then you can use a scrub brush with a mild soap solution. Hose it off and air dry.
