If you want to attract bird life into your garden, next to providing them accommodation in the form of a bird house, you can do worse than providing them with a source of constant food with a bird feeder. There are lots of different bird feeders available, from metal bird feeders to wooden versions that are less obtrusive and are quite decorative in their own way. Some notes about bird feeders : do keep them clean, just as you wouldn't appreciate eating off a dirty plate, your feathered friends will not benefit from a feeder that hasn't been cleaned out regularly.
The bird food that you put out will determine what birds you attract to your garden. Seeds would obviously appeal to the seed eaters and other offerings like fruit would appeal to other palates. It pays to have a book on bird identification handy just so you can pick out the various species as they come and visit.
